My maid of honor brought up my ex multiple times during her wedding speech.

I got married last weekend. It was supposed to be the happiest day of my life. And mostly it was, until my maid of honor got up to speak.

For context, my maid of honor is still friends with my ex, Josh. We dated for five years. We broke up three years ago and it wasn’t messy or dramatic, it just ran its course. I’ve been with my now-husband for the last two years. Josh isn't in my life anymore, but my MOH has always stayed in touch with him.

Before the wedding, she’d say stuff like “Josh was such a big part of your life” or “I always thought you two would end up together.” At the time I brushed it off. I honestly didn’t think she was going to make my wedding about my ex.

Her speech started fine. She talked about how we met, some funny memories, and then she said, “I’ve known Haley (that’s me) through all of her love stories. Especially Josh.”

I froze.

Then she said, “Josh was her first real love. I thought they were forever. Even though it didn’t work out, I still believe they had something rare.”

I was waiting to see where this was going. I thought maybe there was a point. But it just kept getting worse.

She continued.

“This wedding is a beautiful new chapter… but Josh was the classic love story.”

And then she joked, saying, “Honestly, Josh might’ve been the one walking down the aisle if things went differently!”

Then she turned to my husband and said, “You’ve got big shoes to fill, but I think you’re doing great buddy.”

I was mortified. He just sat there, staring forward. No reaction. Didn’t even blink.

After her speech, I tried to shake it off. I didn’t want to cause a scene, and I didn’t want to start my marriage fighting. But my husband came up to me later and said, “What the hell was that? You actually signed off on that speech?” He thought I had approved it or seen it in advance.

I hadn’t. She told me she was going to keep it light and funny.

He wasn’t yelling, but it really put a damper on the night.

Later that night, it was just ruining a lot of things so I had to talk to her. I asked her, “In what world is that okay?”

She looked genuinely confused and said, “What? I thought it was a great speech.”

Then she said, “Josh was a huge part of your story. You can’t just pretend he didn’t exist.”

Then, right before she left, she hugged me and said, “Josh would be so happy for you.”

And walked away.

Sounded like she was the one who dated Josh. I would’ve unplugged the mic and walked out. That was so weird.
