My dad wants to pay for the whole wedding. On one condition.

My fiancé and I have been slowly planning our wedding over the past few months. We’re trying to stay within budget, DIY what we can, and just keep things relatively simple. 

But we finally sat down with my dad last weekend because we knew he had offered to help financially, and we needed to start locking some things in.

We started breaking everything down for my dad so he could decide how much he'd be willing to contribute. After looking over everything, he said he’d be happy to pay for all of it but we’d have to promise him something.

Right away, without thinking, my fiancé and I both said “of course.”
Oops.

He goes on to say that we have to name our firstborn after my grandpa, who passed away last year.

Which sounds really sweet, right?

Except my grandpa’s name was Cletus.

My fiancé instantly burst out laughing.

I asked if we could maybe use it as a middle name, and he immediately said no. It had to be the first name. He said, “It’s about carrying on the name properly.”

Now he’s acting like we shook on it and keeps bringing up how excited he is. Apparently all his old buddies used to call my grandpa Cleet, and he thinks it’s “got a cool ring to it.”

I don’t want to be rude. I loved my grandpa. But come on. I also don’t want my future child being bullied his whole life. 

Would anyone else take the deal? I’m torn…

Middle name. That’s the only sane version of this. Let your dad feel honored, but don’t give your child a name he’ll have to explain every time he introduces himself.
